  • Helene Marsh AO is Emeritus Professor in Environmental Science at James Cook University. Her previous roles at JCU included Dean of Graduate Research and Head of the  School of Tropical Environmental Studies and Geography. Helene s a marine conservation biologist with more than 40 years’ experience in research into species conservation, management and policy with particular reference to tropical coastal and riverine megafauna, especially dugongs. She is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (Vice-President and Secretary Biological Sciences 2019-23), the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and the Royal Zoological Society. Her research has been recognised by awards from the Pew Foundation, the Society for Conservation Biology, the American Society of Mammalogists, Society for Marine Mammalogy,  and the Australian Marine Science Association. She chaired the national Threatened Species Scientific Committee 2011-23. Helene is especially proud of the accomplishments of the more than 60 PhD candidates that she has supervised to graduation, all of whom have taught her a lot.
